Odorless Composting Systems

Composting is usually considered to be a smelly affair. Now if you rely on worms to produce compost then chances are that you wear a mask before going near your composter. However, the Worm factory worm composting solution ensures that your backyard remains odorless even though it is open in structure. This is basically due to its unique design that allows you to place it outdoors as well as indoors. Moreover, when it is used correctly, it can be operated year round. Here are a few tips to ensure that worm bins remain odorless regardless of where you place it or when you use it.

Tips To Keep Odor Away From Compost

•    Always mix together greens with brows. It is best to use 3 parts of brown for 1 part of green. This should prevent the compost pile from becoming wet and also keep beneficial microbes busy with their activities.

•    When a pile is too wet, it disallows microbes and worms to perform their task efficiently. Hence instead of getting sweet smelling stuff you end up with putrid and smelly waste that is not even usable in your backyard garden.

•    Always break down the compost before you introduce it into the worm bins. Smaller the pieces are the faster they get aerated and composted. Chop vegetable scraps, leaves and other items so that the surface area increases allowing better permeability of moisture and oxygen.

•    Turning is essential to provide proper oxygen content to the compost. While it is not necessary to do this every few days, you should ideally turn compost even in worm composting systems once every two weeks. This will reduce the smell from the pile and increase compost production.

Always remember that a stinking compost pile is usually because of the presence of anaerobic conditions. To fix this ensure proper aeration and reduced moisture content.
